CENTRE WELLINGTON · TN DOCUMENTS

Build a TN file around the credential the profession actually requires

THE SHORT ANSWER

A TN document set for a Centre Wellington technologist should lead with the record that decides the case: the transcript matched to the Appendix 2 entry. Hypothetical example: a mechanical engineering technology graduate offered a field role by a US equipment distributor needs the letter to name the Scientific Technician/Technologist profession, identify the supervising engineer and describe support work, with the transcript and diploma attached. Everything else in the file supports that match.

01

Put the transcript and the entry on the same page

The first two pages of the file should be the Appendix 2 entry for the profession and the official transcript. An officer at a port of entry has minutes; if the credential and the profession's rule are visible immediately, the rest of the file is read in that light. For a technologist, the transcript must show a discipline that supports the work, and the entry's requirement that the work be in direct support of a professional must be answered by the employer. Provincial certification as a technologist can be included as evidence of discipline, but it should not be described as a licence to practise engineering, and the letter should not call the applicant an engineer.

02

Make the employer letter answer the officer's questions

The support letter should be written as if the officer had asked five questions: what profession, what duties, who supervises, for how long, and at what pay. Name the licensed engineer who directs the projects and describe how the technologist's tasks support that engineer's work. State that the employment is temporary and prearranged, that the applicant is a Canadian citizen, and whether the applicant holds any ownership interest in the employer; U.S. self-employment is not permitted. Attach an organization chart. Avoid marketing language about the applicant's excellence; officers respond to specific facts and consistent titles, and a title that changes between the letter, the résumé and the offer creates avoidable ambiguity.

03

Decide the procedure and carry the right originals

A Canadian citizen may apply at a port of entry or the employer may file Form I-129; no visa stamp is required in either case. If the profession fit is clear, the port of entry is faster. If it is arguable, an I-129 filing provides an advance USCIS petition decision, but CBP still decides admission and approval does not guarantee entry. Carry originals or certified copies of the transcript and diploma, the signed letter, proof of citizenship, and evidence of the employer's business. TD family members need their own proof of relationship and citizenship; they may study but may not work. Check the CBP and USCIS pages for current procedure before travel, because port practices and fee amounts change.
