Let’s make your move.
✦WORK.
BUILD.
BELONG.

Approval is a photograph of a set of facts on one day. Most of the difficulty a Puslinch household meets afterwards comes from facts that moved: a promotion, a restructuring, a sale of shares, a worksite that shifts sixty kilometres, a child who turns twenty-one. Hypothetical example: a geologist at an aggregate producer is admitted to work for a United States operator, and eight months later his employer is bought and his job title changes. Nothing about the original file was wrong. It simply stopped describing him, and no category treats that as harmless.

THERE’S MORE THAN ONE WAY FORWARD.

THE DREAM IS YOURS.
LET’S FIND THE WAY.

The six routes here respond very differently to change. TN is tied to one employer and one described role, so a genuine change usually means seeking admission again. The L categories are tied to a corporate relationship that can itself be altered by a share sale. E-2 depends on an enterprise that must keep qualifying at every renewal. EB-5 involves a project that can revise its own business plan years after the investment. The Gold Card framework is built around a payment that cannot be undone. Knowing which of those is fragile in your circumstances is the useful comparison.

YOU WEREN’T
MADE TO
THINK SMALL.

Before anything is filed, write down the three or four things most likely to move in the next two years: a title, an owner, a location, a contract, a birthday. Then work out, for each, whether it would require an amended petition, a fresh admission, a notification to a consulate, or nothing at all. That short table is worth more than a long memorandum, because it tells the household which developments must be reported to somebody and which can be absorbed quietly. Keep it beside the approval notice and revisit it whenever an employer announces anything.

FROM “ONE DAY”
TO YOUR NEXT STEP.

Personal support.
A practical plan.
No promises we can’t keep.

01

Record the facts the approval rests on

List the employer, the role, the worksite, the ownership percentages, the amounts and the ages exactly as they were stated. That list is the baseline against which any later development is measured.

02

Identify what is likely to move

Promotions, acquisitions, relocations, contract losses and birthdays are the usual candidates. Naming them in advance is not pessimism; it is the only way to know which ones matter.

03

Decide the response to each in advance

For each foreseeable change, note whether it needs an amended petition, a new admission, a notification, or nothing. Attach an estimated cost and lead time to each answer.

04

Review whenever a fact actually moves

Treat an announcement, a closing or a birthday as a trigger to reread the list, not as news to file away. Most problems are cheap while they are still recent.

A LITTLE CLARITY GOES A LONG WAY.

YOUR FUTURE.
NOW BOARDING.

A household that has already decided what it will do if the employer is sold, or if the project changes its plan, does not have to make that decision under pressure. It simply executes the answer it prepared. That is the practical value of thinking about change in advance: it converts an emergency into an administrative step with a known cost and a known timeline. It also prevents the most damaging response, which is to carry on unchanged and hope that nobody compares the current facts with the ones that were approved.

SUPPORT THAT REACHES YOU.
A BIGGER HORIZON.

Shneur Herman, Jo Kubti and Alexander Paton work with Puslinch clients remotely; there is no local office and no address to visit. A first conversation covers the current plan and then the foreseeable changes to it, and produces a written note of which developments would need action. Corporate, tax and licensing matters are referred to the appropriate professional. Households are encouraged to come back when something moves rather than at the next renewal deadline.

BEFORE THE BIG MOVE

LET’S CLEAR
A FEW THINGS UP.

Does a promotion put a work status at risk?

It can. Where the classification depends on the duties described in the approved file, a materially different role is a different case, and continuing without addressing it means the facts no longer match the approval. Some changes need an amended petition, some need a fresh admission, and some are immaterial.

What happens if the employer is acquired?

It depends on the classification and on what the transaction actually did. Some corporate changes leave the approved arrangement intact through successorship, some break a qualifying relationship, and some require new filings. The share purchase agreement decides it, so it should be reviewed rather than summarised.

If a job ends unexpectedly, is there any breathing room?

Regulation provides a limited discretionary period for several employment-based classifications when employment ends, capped and subject to the remaining validity of the status. It is short, it is not automatic in every situation, and it is a window in which to act rather than a cushion.

Do these routes have to be reported to anyone in Canada?

Working in the United States can affect Canadian permanent residence obligations, tax residence and provincial coverage. Those are questions for Canadian advisers, but they change with the same events, so they belong on the same list.
