Start with the TN eligibility and application overview
Read the Appendix 2 entry before the offer
Each listed profession carries its own qualification rule. Engineer requires a baccalaureate or licence; Scientific Technician/Technologist requires theoretical knowledge of a discipline and the ability to solve practical problems, with the work performed in direct support of a professional in that field. A technologist offered independent design responsibility may not fit either entry cleanly. Ask the distributor to describe the supervising engineer and the actual tasks before drafting anything, because the letter must reflect that answer. Request a work ledger naming the supervisor's assignments, professional qualifications, and checking arrangement. This record makes the support relationship visible, whereas an organization chart frequently does not. Inability to state how technical work is checked means re-evaluating the classification before travel.
Let the transcript settle the credential
Obtain the official transcript and the diploma, and compare the program title to the discipline named in the letter. A diploma in mechanical engineering technology does not become an engineering degree because the applicant has ten years of experience; some entries allow experience to substitute, but the Engineer entry does not. Where a licence exists, provincial technologist certification can help describe the discipline but is not the same as a professional engineer licence. If the credential label is shorthand or a translation, get the school registrar's wording before the job description is finalized. Course catalogue excerpts can illuminate a field of study, yet cannot make a diploma satisfy a degree-only occupation. Decide whether the credential-led choice must be abandoned before the description becomes final.
Confirm citizenship and the employment structure
TN is available only to Canadian and Mexican citizens; a Centre Wellington resident holding Canadian permanent residence needs a different route. The US distributor must be the employer or a party engaging the applicant's services on a prearranged basis; self-employment in the United States is not permitted. If the applicant holds shares in her Canadian employer or in the distributor, that interest must be disclosed rather than left out of the letter. Create an ownership memorandum listing each share position, voting entitlement, and operational authority at both businesses. Classification turns on practical control and the way tasks are performed, not on a compensation label. Deal with any control question before TN-dependent travel is planned.
Choose the procedure and prepare for questions
A Canadian citizen may apply at a port of entry with the support letter and credentials, or the employer may file Form I-129 with USCIS; no visa stamp is issued. Expect the officer to ask how a technologist supports a professional and who that professional is. A letter that answers those questions in plain terms, with the transcript attached, is stronger than a long recital of the applicant's achievements. Once admitted, download the electronic I-94 and check its stated class and expiry against the planned project. A wrong arrival record matters even if every application paper is right. When the employer, function, or schedule later changes, review that new situation before continuing services; the first decision does not authorize every subsequent arrangement.
