Read the general professional work overview
Hypothetical example: an Erin land surveyor preparing a TN file splits it in two. The employer controls the support letter, duty description and statement of who pays; those can still be changed and should be requested in draft. The applicant controls citizenship evidence, the degree and transcript, and the provincial licence; those are fixed and only need to be current and complete. Ask for the employer's set early because it is the part that can still be corrected. Hypothetical example: a Canadian forest-products economist is offered a fixed-term analysis role by a U.S. pulp producer. She must decide whether the employer will describe an Economist position and place her on its payroll before she orders an expedited transcript. That decision determines whether the record set is worth completing.
What to ask the employer to write
Request a draft letter, not a final one. It should identify the legal entity that will employ and pay, describe the professional surveying work in enough detail that an officer can match it to the Land Surveyor entry, state that the work is prearranged and for a defined period, and set out the salary or fee arrangement. Ask the firm to state whether the applicant holds any ownership interest in it, because silence on that point is worse than disclosure. Ask it to avoid a job title borrowed from a recruitment advertisement. If the firm resists putting any of this in writing, that reluctance is itself a finding worth acting on before anyone resigns. Ask the employer to attach or identify the actual offer terms behind the letter. The job, payor, supervisor, and dates should agree across both documents. If they do not, resolve the inconsistency before the applicant relies on a polished immigration letter that the company itself will not honour.
What only the applicant can supply
Proof of Canadian citizenship is the threshold document and a permanent resident card does not substitute for it. The Land Surveyor entry may be met by a state, provincial or federal licence, or by a baccalaureate or Licenciatura degree; it has no experience alternative. The degree and official transcript should be requested early, and the provincial surveying licence should be produced as a current certificate of good standing rather than a wall copy. These records cannot be improved by argument, which is why they should be gathered first and set aside. Make a checklist that distinguishes an original, a certified copy, and an online printout. The applicant must decide which credential record proves the exact requirement for the chosen profession, then order that record early. A general diploma is not always the document that answers the credential question.
What to sort out separately
Two matters travel alongside the immigration file without being part of it. The first is state surveying licensure, which decides whether the applicant can perform and certify work at all, and which is administered by a state board on its own timetable. Ask the employer what its expectation is if the licence is not in place on the intended start date. The second is how admission will be sought: presentation at a port of entry or preclearance facility as a Canadian citizen, or a petition filed by the employer. Ask which the firm intends, who pays, and how much lead time it needs. For Canadians, the employer may submit an I-129 to USCIS or the applicant may request TN classification from an inspecting officer at a crossing or preclearance site. Both require genuine employment by the U.S. enterprise rather than a self-directed commercial arrangement. Pick the route before booking travel.
