Read the general life across the border overview
Hypothetical example: a Puslinch geologist's household is affected when his principal status changes. A TD spouse may study but not work; an L-2 or E-2 spouse is employment-authorized incident to status, but that authorization remains derivative. Children may study, not work, and qualify only while unmarried and under twenty-one. Each family member therefore needs a separate contingency plan.
The spouse's position when employment ends
In TD status a spouse may not work at all, so the household's exposure is to the principal's income alone. In L-2 or E-2 dependent status a spouse is employment-authorised incident to status, which often becomes a second income the household relies on, and that authorisation is only as secure as the status it derives from. Regulation provides a limited discretionary period for several employment-based classifications when employment ends, capped and never beyond the validity already granted. It is a window in which to act, not permission to continue working. The household should know in advance what it would do inside that window.
The seventeen-year-old and the clock nobody controls
A seventeen-year-old can be admitted as a dependant and can attend school, and cannot take paid work of any kind, including casual summer employment. Four years later the position changes automatically. Dependent status is available only while a child is unmarried and under twenty-one, so a household planning a stay of several years is planning around a fixed date. The usual answer is a change to student status before the birthday rather than in the month it arrives, which gives the young person a status of their own that survives whatever happens to the parent's employment. Student status has its own conditions on enrolment and on work, and they should be read in advance.
The ten-year-old, and keeping one page current
The younger child's position is the simplest and is mostly a scheduling matter: enrolment, the timing of the move, and whether the family travels together. What she contributes to the planning is a reminder to keep a single page listing every household member, their status, what each may do, and the date on which each thing expires. Update it whenever anything moves: an employer announcement, a promotion, a change of worksite, a licence renewal, a birthday. Families that maintain that page find problems while they are administrative. Families that do not usually find the same problems at a renewal, when the options have narrowed.
